So, I bought a new hard drive and replaced the old one and bought a Windows XP home edition CD (not an upgrade) on ebay without a product key, with the understanding that the product key on my computer would work. Everything loaded fine, but now it's asking for my Product Key. The Product ID I have is like this: xxxxx-OEM-xxxxxxx-xxxxx, or 5digits-OEM-7digits-5digits. The program is looking for five sets of 5 digits, and no matter how I try and type my code in, it's not good enough. Is this not the right key?

No, it probably wouldn't work. Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice versa.
